Emre Aracı's book on the history of Folkestone's Edwardian Grand Hotel
Opened on 12 September 1903 as the Grand Mansions on the once fashionable Leas in Folkestone, the Grand quickly became a popular establishment with the London society. Folkestone’s newest hotel was indeed to prove to be a magnet for members of royalty and nobility, as well as politicians, writers and musicians, who came for lengthy stays in the summer months during the gilded Edwardian age. By no means a definitive history, Emre Aracı's book brings together vignettes of colourful stories from the Grand’s elegant past, drawn from a selection of sepia postcards, old newspaper cuttings, out-of-print books, letters and ephemera. |
